Oregon's Native American History and Art

Many people use the collective term "Native Art of the Pacific Northwest." But, there were many differences between tribes in Oregon and tribes in Washington, British Columbia, & Alaska. For example, historically, totem poles weren't part of Oregon's tribal cultures. Historical photos demonstrate how Oregon's tribes showed artistic expression via basketry; canoes; longhouses; beadwork (on clothing, necklaces, headdresses, & cradleboards); burial platforms; & rock art (petroglyphs & pictographs)

Fishing at Willamette Falls - c. 1842
Chinook Indians fishing Willamette Falls 1842 from "Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition", by Charles Wilkes, published in 1845. The Wilkes Expedition spent four years circling the globe, returning to the U.S. on the Pacific Coast, before making their way back to Washington D.C. Thus the original sketch by Joseph Drayton was made on site in 1841, and the engraving likely created by Jordan and Halpin in 1842. The scene, of course, is traditional fishing at Willamett

Daughter of the Wild - 1907
This evocative study of a young woman was created by James Haran, an award-winning Portland amateur photographer. While we've placed the location in Portland, we're not sure where the photo was taken. Some of Haran's winning photos were from as far away as his travels in Ireland. Known for his scenic shots as well as Native American portraits, Haran was an active member of the Oregon Camera Club from 1903 to 1909.
