Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was een Frans kunstschilder en beeldhouwer. Hij staat bekend als de merkwaardigste Franse fauvist. Tijdens een moeizaam herstel van één jaar na een blindedarmoperatie, begint hij prenten te kopiëren. Hij wordt door de kleuren gegrepen. Hij krijgt contact met Georges Rouault, Charles Camoin, Henri Manguin en met de Belg Henri Evenepoel, zijn latere geestesgenoten in het fauvisme.
