Proteins are made up of chains of amino acids that fold into complex three-dimensional shapes determined by their primary, secondary, and tertiary structures. The primary structure is the linear sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide chain. Secondary structures form due to hydrogen bonding and include alpha helices and beta sheets.
