Plant of the week for week 3 is Garrya elliptica 'James Roof', with it's exceptionally long and decorative catkins making a wonderfully welcoming sight on a cold winter's morning. This plant was photographed in Cornwall in 2007 and while it is often grown trained against a wall, this specimen of the hardy evergreen shrub was free-standing. Garrya elliptica is a native from the Oregon coast south to Central California. This variety was selected by the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation .
