Product Details
This activity is a great way to help students understand how to find distance between two points on a coordinate plane by using the absolute value between the points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. I made this so it is more than just a counting activity. Students will be required to identify the coordinates of the two points, and show how they used the absolute value between the points in different quadrants to determine the distance. They can check their answers afterwards using the x and y axis as horizontal and vertical number lines. This activity meets or exceeds Common Core standard 6.NS.C.8, but could also be used in lower grades, and as a review in 7th grade to prepare for the Common Core standard 7.NS.A.1.c. CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.C.8 Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.
