Chinese dao of unusual form. Of the Hudiedao family, this piece is a wonderfully agile fighting knife. 42cms overall witha robust 30cm blade with a decorated brass tonkou and a clearly forged blade. The wide 'S' guard allows the thumb to easily twist the dao for instant reversing of the blade for forearm protection and back again in effortless motion. The fine beaked horn grip has an iron collar and a small washer to the base where the tang is secured.

Another set of Hudieda exhibiting different styling. An S-guard is used on these swords, which are more common on Chinese weapons. These knives are 45 cm long and are both shorter and lighter than some of the preceding examples. Photo courtesy of http://www.swordsantiqueweapons.com
