Arthur Shilstone sketch of the Ghost Army digging in after their arrival in Normandy. The Ghost Army was officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. From June 1944 to March 1945 it staged 20 battlefield deceptions, beginning in Normandy and ending along the Rhine River. The deceivers employed an array of inflatables (tanks, trucks, jeeps, airplanes), sound trucks, phony radio transmissions and even playacting to fool the enemy.

THE GHOST ARMY Officially known as the Army’s 23rd Headquarters Special Troops during World War II, the Ghost Army played a major role in putting a stop to Hitler’s advances through Europe. The plan: pull off the equivalent of extravagant high school plays to trick the enemy into believing there was a huge military presence when there really wasn't. They employed fake inflatable tanks, trucks and weapons in conjunction with war noises through huge military speakers.
