The art and politics of riot grrrl - in pictures

The art and politics of riot grrrl - Thorn No 2 zine by Kelly Marie Martin, 1992. What tends to be forgotten about riot grrrl is that it highlighted underground cultural figures. Martin wrote an ardent homage to artist and Aids activist David Wojnarowicz, who had died that year. Other zines paid tribute to feminist poet Audre Lorde, and activist Amy Carter, daughter of the former US president. Fales Library NYU / Feminist Press

Fales Library: The Riot Grrrl Collection is an attempt to document the evolution of the Riot Grrrl movement, particularly in the years between 1989 and 1996. Because Riot Grrrl was (and is) both a political and a cultural movement, its output was diverse, including writing, music, performance, film, activism, photography, video, and original art, as well as documentation of activism and performance. #zines #zinsters #DIY #indie #riotgrrrl
