I Am A Man: On April 3, 1968, Memphis workers went on strike to fight for the right to unionize, following the death of two African-American sanitation workers. Printed placards bearing the statement "I Am A Man” were held by members who gathered at the Mason Temple It was to these 1,300 people that Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. He was assassinated the next day.
