Francisco de Zurbarán, Santa Isabel de Portugal, c 1635. Zurbaran, was a major source of inspiration for Balenciaga. Look at the back volume along the saint's shoulder line. You will see similar silhouettes begin to emerge in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Balenciaga's gowns. Also the color palette from many of Zurbaran's paintings are perhaps influential in Balenciaga's own selections for color and fabrics.
