Kimonos As Works of Art Japanese textile artist Itchiku Kubota singlehandedly revived the 350-year-old art of tsujigahana, an elaborate method of decorating fabric with tie-dying, paint brushing, ink drawing, gold-leaf application and embroidery. As a young boy, he saw a kimono at the Tokyo National Museum and was so taken with its beauty he stared at it for three hours. "In a sudden moment," "I encountered a source of boundless creativity which revealed to me my calling."
