The Wellcome Library, London, England, has acquired a gorgeous 15th century manuscript with fold-out illustrations relating to astrology and medicine. Previously unknown to scholars, in fact, it turns out to have been owned by eccentric English poet Edith Sitwell.

Guilelmus Carthusiensis (fl. 15th century). Sermones super Orationem Dominicam. Paris: Ulrich Gering and Berthold Rembolt, 1494. Facing an unprecedented increase in book production, fifteenth-century Netherlandish binders popularized a time-saving measure known as panel stamping, in which heated metal plates cast in relief were impressed into the dampened leather covers in a press. This process allowed for a more abundant and pictorially coherent design than repetitious blind tooling did.

The bible of Elizabeth Ist, 1583 The most decorative, and in many ways the finest, of all the remaining embroidered books of the time of Elizabeth is now at the Bodleian Library at Oxford. It is one of the 'Francis Douce' Bibles, printed in London in 1583 and probably bound about the same time. It was the property of the Queen herself, and is bound in crimson velvet, measuring 42,5 by 30 cm
