May 18, 1940. German and Dutch soldiers salute each other. After the capitulation of the Dutch army on May 15, 1940 only 20,000 of the 300,000 Dutch military personnel were detained in POW camps. As a gesture of good will they were released by order of Hitler in June 1940. Hitler had chosen this option for ideological reasons: the Dutch were a "related brother people" and Hitler wanted to win them over to National Socialism. It did not work.
