Pelerine, circa 1830, British, purple silk with intricate floral embroidery. Interesting evolution of the term 'pelerine' when this looks rather like a mantle, or evening shawl. Pelerines by the mid 1800s were small shoulder coverings fashioned to match a dress and came to a point or sharp pair at about the midriff. This is a beautiful garment, and I wonder what decade the owner stopped wearing it. In storage at the Met.
