With the name of William Alexander Leidesdorff, begins  the documented history of pioneers of Negro origin in California. Born in the Virgin Islands [then the Danish West Indies], the gifted son of William Leidesdorff, a Danish sugar planter, and Anna Marie Spark, a native woman having Negro blood, Leidesdorff found his way to California in 1841. Later founded the town of Rancho Cordova, outside Sacramento, with the main highway bearing his name today.
