At Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Pfc Clayton Hayes of the 505th Battalion of the 82nd Division, helps a woman and her son to carry their things. Pfc Hayes was killed in Holland Sept. 20, 1944 during Operation Market Garden.

Typical view of GI's living in the Ardennes woods during winter 1945-45. This photo was realised on january 3, 1945 by Private A.H. Herz (U.S. Army Signal Corps) on the south-east frontline of Bastogne, not in the 17th AB Division area but in the 320th Infantry Regiment - 35th Infantry Division. The scene is very similar with the north west frontline (credit U.S. Army Signal Corps - TFH collection).
