GORGETED PUFFLEG, by Anne Lemanski. Copper rod, vinyl, artificial sinew. 2010. The gorgeted puffleg inhabits the cloud forests of Colombia. It is nearly extinct due to illegal coca cultivation. Lemanski's current focus is on the complex, symbiotic relationship between humans and animals, highlighting our admiration for animals as symbols, and our exploitation of them to suit our needs.
ANNE LEMANSKI: MEXICAN PRAIRIE DOG, The Mexican Prairie Dog (Cynomys mexicanus) is endemic to north-central Mexico. Habitat loss due to the expansion of agriculture and livestock farming has given this creature endangered status. Many colonies have been exterminated through poisoning. The imagery on the grenade is from Mexican loteria cards, a bingo like game of chance that dates back to the 18th century.
