203-Meter Hill rose from the ground at a point some 2 kilometers northwest of the town of Port Arthur. Nearby, across a valley, were the hills of Anzishan and Chair Hill. And adjacent to 203-Meter Hill were Flat Hill and Long Hill (known to the Japanese as Akasaka Yama and Namako Yama respectively). All of these were well fortified, the undulating hills bound together in a tightly interlocking defense system. Not even a rat could have run through without being hit by a cascade of gunfire.
