Ainu couple 1950's The Ainu are the indigenous people of Japan - sharing a relationship with the Japanese government similar to that of the American relationship with native American tribes. Today there are almost no pure Ainu. Physicaly, they share traits with Oceanic peoples, Asians, and Caucasians. Genetically, they cluster with other Asians, and may represent a more archaic or 'generalized' Eurasian look before Caucasians/Asians became more specialized and physically distinct.
