Anton Raphaël MENGS - The picture of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple disappeared during World War II, when bombing the Royal Chapel of the Palace of Caserta, near Naples. This preparatory drawing is the only autograph trace. The esteem for the work by the Neapolitan Court facilitated the departure of Mengs, already celebrated as the "new Raphael" to Madrid, headquarters of the kingdom of Ferdinand IV. His career then took a truly international dimension.
