Juana Galán was known for beating (literally) Napoleon’s troops from her village during the Battle of Valdepeñas in June, 1808. Without enough men to defend the village from the invading French, Juana aged 21, rallied the women in the village to drive out the French troops. They threw boiling oil on them and beat them with clubs. The French never returned.
