St Joan of Arc, icon by Br. Robert Lentz, OFM. Smart and courageous, Joan had visions of saints and angels who told her to cut her hair, put on men’s clothes and go to war. At 18 she helped crown a king and at 19 she was killed by the church. Clergy friendly to the English condemned Joan as a heretic -- because she wore men’s clothing, and refused to deny the reality of what she heard in prayer. LGBT people recognize a kindred spirit in her stubborn defiance of gender rules.
