Ahmad Jamal, underexposed and underappreciated, Jamal is an innovative and influential pianist, composer, and educator. He is a transitional figure in the movement away from bebop to cool jazz in the late 50's and early 60's. His unique musical style and use of space puts him in the rarified class with Thelonious Monk. He set the standard for later jazz piano greats Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner.
