Minoan palace of ZAKROS is near the beach. To the north of the palace is the mountain of Traostalos: site of a Minoan peak sanctuary. Excavations have shown recently that other Minoan buildings (watch towers) were in mountains nearby. Towers were linked w/ paved paths, & a wall surrounded the whole area, leaving an entrance only from the Zakros Gorge.Drive from Zakros to Kato Zakros offers impressive views of sea & coast. The exit of the Valley of Death is clearly visible behind the site.
