Osmium is both the densest and the rarest element that you can dig out of the Earth. It's so hard that it's used (as an alloy) in places with constant pressure and wear, like the tips of fountain pens. One single cubic inch of this stuff weighs nearly a pound, and were you to somehow get a cubic foot of it, it would weigh over 1,400 pounds. Good luck with that, though: last year, the entire U.S. osmium production was only 165 pounds.

Tendrilous silver specimen: themineralogist themineralogist: Silver (by stefan_fotos) wow The noises coming out of my mouth while looking at this blog are not human… Is there such a thing as lusting after minerals?   mmm yes, mineral lust/porn most certainly exists. i’m surprised there’s not much love for this one in particular. but then again it doesn’t have your typical “quartz-like” crystal shape. but that’s also the reason why i love this!

Elle pourrait aisément se retrouver dans le top 25 des plus belles pierres précieuses et minéraux de la planète !
