Painting by an unknown artist showing the artist's conception of Queen Elizabeth of England I, at the age of three (right), at the age of five (left) and at the age of six (middle). The fashions are anachronistic, not contemporary with the queen's youth. But a charming painting, nonetheless.

Elizabeth I's Maid of Honour, Elizabeth Vernon. This lady, who was exceedingly well-connected, and a descendant on both sides of Edward III, secretly married the earl of Southhampton. As she was one of the Maids of Honor, the queen was enraged on discovering the marriage, and the 2 were briefly imprisoned, never again to be favored by the queen. It is sometimes alleged, w/o foundation, that Shakespeare was the father of the child who hurried the marriage. See her Wiki bio.
