Cloughoughter Castle Lough Oughter.Castle started in late 12th Century by O'Rourke clan,taken over & finished by O'Reillys in 1200's & used as fortification in ongoing fighting with O'Rourkes.During 1641 Rebellion seized & held by Philip O'Reilly the leader of Irish rebels & used as prison,then later fortified stronghold.For 12 years held by rebels & last place to fall to British,when shelled by Cromwell's forces.
