Latin Jazz pioneer, Chano Pozo. Pozo grew up in the notorious El Africa solar (Africa basement), a former slave quarters, in Havana. He was a criminal, a brawler, a lady killer, a devotee of Shango, & an authentic rumbero. Indeed, his composition for Carnival, La Comparsa de los Dandys, is often considered the unofficial theme song of Santiago de Cuba. In New York he collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie. He was shot dead at 33.
