In Spain, women often wear a lace or silk vail over their head/shoulders called a mantilla. Often they wear a peineta with it (like a high comb) as shown in this picture. It is also associated with a religious practice in the Roman Catholic Church. The lace mantillas became popular in the 18th/19th century.
