Josef Koudelka, Czech 1938-present, Title: Gypsies in the Czech Republic (1966), known for defining images of the Russian invasion of Prague in 1968, early work had its emphasis on social and cultural rituals as well as death. Moved on to a more personal, in depth photographic study of the Gypsies of Slovakia, and later Romania. Praised for ability to capture presence of the human spirit amidst desolation, waste, departure, despair and alienation. Later work focuses on the landscape.
