The green stone to the right is a memorial to the 11,000 children deported by the Nazis. In the centre, a portrait bust which looks ugly from the back. From the front, it's even more confusing: it's clearly a woman's head, but the label reads "Guillaume Apollinaire". Girl with Portfolio (c.1799). Guillaume Guillon Lethière (French, 1760–1832). Oil on canvas. Worcester Art Museum. The work is a visual incarnation of fragility — the porcelain face, exquisitely framed by curling tendrils of hair, of this attractive but not quite beautiful girl who seems to be an aspiring artist as she holds an artist’s portfolio and a “porte-crayon,’’ or chalk holder. The girl’s gaze is piercingly direct as she wears a fashionable spencer — a short, boyish jacket.
