Great Synagogue towers, Budapest. There were many, many Jews in Budapest before the Holocaust (24% of the population). Jews were attracted by the liberal policies of Austro-Hungary, which allowed them to flourish in law, medicine, banking, commerce and even the government bureaucracy. Many synagogues remain.
