Hans Holbein the Elder, Self-portrait, 13 x 10 cm, silverpoint and red chalk on paper, circa 1516 (Musée Condé, Chantilly, France). Much less known than his son, Hans Holbein the Elder was one the most accomplished late Gothic painters and also one of the earliest adopters of the Renaissance style in Germany. He produced this subtle and arresting self-portrait in his fifties, probably as a preparatory drawing, since a very similar image appears in one of his altarpieces.
