Polaire, or Émilie Marie Bouchaud, a French actress, she had a 14” waist, first bobbed her hair in the 1890s, and had a nose piercing. Mabel Alvarez, self-portrait, oil/canvas, 1923. Collection Alvarez family, Berkeley, CA.   Alvarez’s self-portrait has broad areas of flat paint, with a simple, symmetrical, and focused composition: a lean description in basic terms. The black line around the rim of her hat and on her shoulder frames color. The portrait is relentlessly honest. For Alvarez, this was Modernism in the tradition of Robert Henri’s economical but deftly painted realism - focused, abbreviated, enigmatic.
