In 1984, when Augusto Odone's son, Lorenzo, was diagnosed with a terminal illness, he worked with his wife Michaela to develop a treatment for Adrenoleukodystrophy, but neither husband nor wife had any sort of medical or scientific backgrounds. The two came up with a dietary oil that slows the progression of the genetic disease. Lorenzo lived until age 30. The family's story was the basis of the 1992 film Lorenzo's Oil, in which Nick Nolte played Augusto Odone.
