F/O Francis N "Fanny" Brinsden undertakes a cockpit check of Spitfire Mk I QV-B prior to take-off from RAF Fowlmere on 21 September 1940. The aircraft was received by No 19 Squadron RAF on 13 September before leaving for No 609 Squadron RAF 6 days after the photograph was taken. It was frequently flown by the 21-year-old New Zealander, after being shot down by an Me 110 near RAF North Weald on 31 August.
