Anhinga A bird of southern swamps, the Anhinga is known as the Water-Turkey for its swimming habits and broad tail, and also as the Snake-Bird for its habit of swimming with just its long head and neck sticking out of the water.

This beautiful heron is found from Mexico to Argentina, occuring in both rainforest and open wetlands. They are often very shy, but the ones in the Pantanal seem to be much more approachable. (S7)
green heron 16-22" (41-56 cm). A dark, crow-sized heron. Crown black, back and wings dark gray-green or gray-blue (depending on lighting); neck chestnut colored. Bill dark; legs bright orange. Immatures have streaks on neck, breast, and sides.
