Jerome Robbins - (Oct11, 1918, New York -July 29, 1998). American choreographer whose work ranged from classical ballet to musical theater. Born Jerome Wilson Rabinowitz. Received Academy Award for Best Director, 1961 (West Side Story). Also received Special Academy Award for Choreography, 1961; five Tony Awards; Kennedy Center Honors, National Medal of the Arts; and French Legion of Honor. Avoided blacklisting during the McCarthy era by cooperating with McCarthy's investigating committee.
