Rubeosis iridis is a condition which causes abnormal blood vessel growth on the iris and the structures in the front of the eye. When the retina has been deprived of oxygen such as in diabetic retinopathy or CRVO, these abnormal blood vessels form to supply oxygen to the front of the eye. The formation of these vessels obstructs the drainage of aqueous fluid from the front of the eye, causing elevated eye pressure. This usually leads to neovascular glaucoma.
