Horse-drawn Telescopic Ladder. Before the arrival of a horse-drawn ladder, the fire-fighters had to drag a hook and ladder truck by hand, from the fire station to the location of the fire, often exhausting themselves in the process. After a devastating fire at the Grand Hotel, the Auckland City Council came under increased pressure to replace the ageing fire-fighting equipment.
