Mariano Fortuny, Stencil Velvet Jacket, ca 1930, Italy. The lace pattern is hand stenciled with layers of subtly changing silver/gray pigment, reproducing the Renaissance fresco effect. Fortunys inspiration often came from several sources. By a kind aesthetic dialectic, he synthesized ideas to create a new and different design. Here he brilliantly combines blocks based on Islamic tiles with borders based on 17th century lace.
