In 1976, a United Nations resolution called for an independent Palestine state. This ended the Israeli occupation in that area. The Palestinians thought and still think that they should get all of Israel's land but the Israelis were and are willing to give up that piece of land for peace. This created a huge conflict that is still ongoing today.
