Franz Weis drives his F5000 car in the 1971 Lime Rock F5000 championship race. Weis built this car from an 1966 GM built Indy car chassis given to Jim Hall. Chaparral was never able to do anything with the chassis. Weis used it as the basis of his own hobby project. Franz raced it in two races, finishing 14th at Donnybrooke and crashed at Lime Rock, having qualified 13th. While not an official Chaparral car, Weis used the traditional number 66. Don Feeley photo.
Previously unseen photo of Franz Weis' 1971 F5000 car. Built from a 1966 experimental GM Indy car chassis, the car was constructed by Weis and Chaparral employees in the Chaparral shop. Aside from the basic chassis, the car was from the mind of Weis. It was raced twice and damaged in its last race. It still exists, bent and unrestored. A Michael Schmidt photo.

Phil Hill practices at Sebring in the newly reworked Chaparral 2F. For Sebring, the radiator vents were redesigned, as was the back deck, eliminating the large Plexiglass window. Unlike at Daytona, the wing was now controlled by the drivers. Albert R. Bochroch photo.
