Russian painter, Wassily Kandinsky (1866 – 1944) is credited with painting the first modern abstract works. He studied law and economics at the University of Moscow, started painting studies at the age of 30, studied in the school of Anton Ažbe and then at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Returning briefly to Moscow in 1914 after WWI started, he returned to Germany in 1921, and taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture until Nazis closed it in 1933. He then moved to France.
