The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic by Darby Penney, Peter Statsny, and photos by Lisa Rinzler. It was a book that took 10yrs to come together and contains the photos & stories of nearly 400 suitcases...and their owners. "...deeply moving testament to the human side of mental illness, and the narrow margin between the sane and the insane." -Oliver Sacks, MD
3.8/5 stars. Author has an amazing imagination but I think that the book was longer than it needed to be and all the imagination came to life in the first half; nothing particularly new after that. The ending was a bit melodramatic. And the parts written specifically for the reader's circus experience really didn't do it for me; I didn't feel it. But I liked how different this book was and the imagination behind it. I'm glad I read it because it originally never appealed to me.
I will warn you, don’t pick up this book if you only have ten minutes to spare because you will not want to put the book down. Outside the Lines is much more than a good read, it is a thought provoking book that will stay with you long after you close the pages. I can’t recommend this book enough!
100 Books Every Woman Should Read: Fiction I've read a number of these, including 'Gone Girl' which was FULL of plot twists. I'd be like "Exactly!" then I'd be like "Holy crap, that's disturbing." Dark and twisted but engaging.
