Henryk Berlewi: Composition in Red, Black and White, gouache on paper, 1924.
The Porter pattern was inspired by construction--Strip Quilting is a traditional technique in which large stripes are sewn together and then cut down, and re-arranged to create a new pattern--this method is used to speed up the process of patchwork quilting--known as a slow and tedious process. For Porter, strips were made, cut down, and then sewn back into strips.
