Christmas in Russia is celebrated on January 7, not December 25 because the Orthodox Church uses the Julian Calendar for religious celebration days. In traditional Russian Christmas, special prayers are said and people fast for up to 39 days up until January 6 when the first evening star appears in the sky then a 12 course meal is shared in honour of the 12 apostles.
