I made these earrings with silver metal clay cast from a wax seal stamp. Once fired the clay is transformed into solid sterling silver and it is burnished for several hours. The silver is then oxidized and burnished again and then hand polished. I've added simple beaded sterling silver earwires for the perfect minimalist finishing touch. The earrings measure just under an inch in total length and are approximately 1/4 of an inch wide. The cicada is an insect that is replete with symbolism in many cultures. They are associated with rebirth and immortality because of their life cycle. Their journey from the ground to the tree to adulthood symbolizes the Buddha's journey to enlightenment.
