Tattoo History - Japanese Tattoo Images - History of Tattoos and Tattooing in Japan
The ancient art form of Japanese Tattoo was known to exist 10,000 years b.c. Historically tattoos were of both spiritual and social significance denoting ritual and status. In approx. 300 - 600 a.d. they began to assume negative connotation and were placed on criminals to denote punishment. Samurai warriors often had whole body tattoos and in more recent history they have been associated with the Yakuza, the notorious Japanese mafia gangs.
