Today in 1881 Jan Sluijters was born. He was a Post-Impressionism pioneer in the Netherlands. In 1904 Sluijters won the Prix de Rome, a grant to study abroad. When he ended up in Paris in 1906, the innovative art of Van Gogh encouraged him to modernise his style of painting. The jury members were so shocked when they saw his work that they refused to grant him the bursary for the remaining period.
